    Abstract Draft Explanations and Instructions

The finishing touch of your paper actually goes at the very beginning.  It is the abstract.  The abstract portion of your paper is straightforward and simple because it introduces the reader to your content, briefly presents the problem, lists one or two research results, and offers a short conclusion.  The abstract should be no more than four to five sentences in length.  It serves as a snapshot of your entire paper.  Examples of abstracts are below for you to use for a guide.

    1. Reason for writing: What is the importance of the research? Why would a reader be interested in the larger work?  (3 points)

    2. Problem: What problem does this work attempt to solve? What is the scope of the project? What is the main argument/thesis/claim? (3 points)

    3. Results: Again, an abstract of a scientific work may include specific data that indicates the results of the project. Other abstracts may discuss the findings in a more general way. (3 points)

    4. Implications: What changes should be implemented as a result of the findings of the work? How does this work add to the body of knowledge on the topic? (3 points)

    Overview
As Abraham Maslow said in The Psychology of Science: A Reconnaissance, “I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail” (1966). In previous modules, we have learned about psychoanalysis, the new wave of psychoanalysis, and the trait tradition. In this module, we have learned about the humanistic approach. This approach challenges a potential cognitive bias in psychoanalysis that treats behavior as pathology, or something that can be diagnosed and treated. For this journal, we will step outside of the pathology lens on behavior and focus on the role of happiness, self-improvement, and compassion.
    Prompt
For your journal, use the Module Four Journal Template Word Document to answer the following questions in about 2 to 5 sentences each. Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
    Analyzing Theory
Describe how humanism differs from the personality theories you have studied so far.
Explain the role of nature and nurture in the humanistic approach.
Describe the role of emotional intelligence in the humanistic approach.
    Applying Theory to Society
Explain the role of systemic issues in society, such as a lack of equity, access, or opportunity in the hierarchy of needs.
The final course in your degree program will challenge you to think about your role as an agent of social change. Explain how the humanistic approach generally, or Maslow’s hierarchy specifically, relates to your initial thoughts about being an agent of social change in your community. You can think about how humanism influences your approach to systemic issues or the role that being an agent of social change has on your views of self-actualization.
Locate and summarize one external article that investigates limitations of Maslow’s hierarchy and systemic issues in society.
    Applying Theory to Self
Thinking about the top of Maslow’s hierarchy, explain what self-actualization means for you. You can focus your answer as narrowly or holistically to your life experience as you would like. Consider what role school or your career has on your answer. Does success in those areas help you achieve self-actualization? Is it something else?
    What to Submit
Submit your completed Module Four Journal Template. Sources should be cited according to APA style.

    Controversial procedure is escape extinction
In this section, fully describe the evidence-based controversial procedure identified in the announcement using information from at least one reputable source (if using more than one, at least one must be a research article from a peer reviewed journal). Describe what it might look like to implement the controversial treatment. How is the behavior originally maintained? What happens once the procedure is implemented?  It can help by giving examples of how this procedure could be implemented. Include within the body of each paragraph an in-text citation for the source you obtained the information regarding the specific procedure (e.g. (Author, Date)). This section is worth 20% of your grade.
    Pros to Controversial Treatment
In this section, discuss (in your own words) 3-4 pros of the identified evidence-based controversial treatment, provide significant context around these pros (i.e., explain why each pro supports the use of the controversial treatment), and cite information from a reputable source. Direct quotes should not be used so you can convey your understanding in your own words. This section is worth 10% of your grade.
    Cons to Controversial Treatment
In this section, discuss (in your own words) 3-4 cons of the identified evidence-based controversial treatment, provide significant context around these cons (i.e., explain why each con opposes the use of the controversial treatment), and cite information from a reputable source. Direct quotes should not be used, as you can convey your understanding in your own words. This section is worth 10% of your grade.
    Evaluation of Ethics
In this section, evaluate the evidence-based controversial treatment using at least four of the BACB ethics codes and justify your opinion on the topic. Provide the specific code numbers and titles of the codes you discuss. Do not copy/paste the code description; instead, explain them in your own words to avoid plagiarism and demonstrate academic scholarly work. Discuss how each code relates to the treatment and analyze both how a behavior analyst could potentially violate the code and how they could act in alignment with it. For example: “A behavior analyst might violate Ethics Code X.XX if they were to recommend the use of [treatment] because…. On the other hand, they could demonstrate alignment with the ethics code if they were to….” Cite and reference the . Finally, for a distinguished score, make sure to summarize whether you would recommend the treatment based on the pros, cons, and ethics codes to justify your opinion. This section is worth 40% of your grade. BACB Ethics Codes for Behavior Analysts. Finally, for a distinguished score, make sure to summarize whether you would recommend the treatment based on the pros, cons, and ethics codes to justify your opinion. This section is worth 40% of your grade.
    Conclusion
In academic writing, the conclusion is intended to help the reader understand why your research/discussion points should matter to them after they have finished reading the paper. A conclusion is not merely a summary of your points or a re-statement of your research problem/discussion but a synthesis of key points.
