a. Description of the Vulnerable Population Identified
Homeless individuals represent a vulnerable population, especially in urban areas, where they lack stable, permanent housing. This population includes people who experience chronic homelessness, living on the streets, in shelters, or in temporary accommodations. Homelessness significantly impacts individuals’ physical, mental, and emotional health, as they are exposed to a range of challenges and risks that contribute to health disparities.
b. Key Risk Factors
Poverty: Homelessness is deeply linked to poverty, which often limits access to essential resources such as adequate nutrition, healthcare, and hygiene. This economic insecurity exacerbates physical and mental health issues.
Mental Health Conditions: Many individuals experiencing homelessness suffer from mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These mental health challenges are often intensified by the trauma and instability associated with homelessness (Garcia et al., 2024).
Limited Access to Healthcare: Homeless individuals face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, including lack of insurance, transportation issues, and mistrust of healthcare systems.
