Although writing occurs in every discipline, what this writing looks like will v

Although writing occurs in every discipline, what this writing looks like will vary across disciplines. For example, writing a lab report in a Biology class is different from writing a literature review in an Economics class or an expert witness testimony in a Courts and Forensics course. Put another way, writing is discipline-specific, which means every discipline has specific genres that are commonly used within that discipline. The purpose of this assignment is to help you become more familiar with what effective writing and communication looks like in your discipline so that you can continue to build your professional ethos.
Identify specific conventions, audiences, and purposes relevant to one’s particular discipline; identify the rhetorical elements of a genre (analysis); and analyze a discipline-specific genre for its genre conventions (analysis).
    Instructions
Your major assignment in this module is to do a genre analysis. So, your task is to complete the genre analysis chart. This assignment’s primary discipline-specific genre is Science Writing for a Popular Audience (see #38.4
    Links to an external site.
). Two other genre types are also relevant: literature reviews (see #23
    Links to an external site.
) and policy memos (see #31
    Links to an external site.
    ).
On the left side of the chart, you will notice different categories for analysis. There are specific guiding questions for you to consider as you analyze your genre. Although you should analyze each category, you do not need to respond to all the questions in each category; instead, you should choose to respond to the questions most applicable to the genre you are analyzing. You put this in the first column: “Analysis of the genre.” Then, you will identify at least one specific example from the genre that offers evidence to support the analysis you put in the first column. You put this in the second column: “Specific evidence from the genre.”

3.Addressing Phishing in the UMASS Higher Education System. All 30 colleges and universities in the Massachusetts higher education system have seen increases in successful phishing attempts. They put in place a new Critical Incident Response Team for the entire UMass system that wants to implement a certification training for all employees designed to teach people to recognize and report phishing attempts and incidents. The university wants to know if the training is effective since it will be expensive and challenging to implement in all of the colleges and universities across the entire system. The team has been given permission by the University to design a school based study to determine if the certification prevents successful phishing attempts. The Team has $250,000 and the cooperation of the UMASS cyber security office.

    Acquainting Yourself with Ethics
You are on patrol and stop a vehicle for expired registration. You approach the driver and notice it is an old friend from school. You give a verbal warning to her and tell her she is free to go. Before leaving, she says it was great to see you again. She asks if you want to get coffee sometime and hands you her phone number.
    1. Would letting her go without issuing a citation be ethical?
    2. Is it appropriate for a police officer to agree to have coffee with an old friend?
    3. Would it be considered unethical for a police officer and an old friend to exchange phone numbers?
    Power and Discretion to Arrest
You are a police officer working the night shift, but you still have a few hours to go and are looking for some caffeine to help you push through the remainder of your shift. You stop at the local store on your beat for some coffee, and a man, who you later learn is the owner, tells you that coffee is now free for all law enforcement; because of how tired you are, you gladly oblige. Over your next few shifts, you visit this store to get coffee. Around a month later, you are about to finish your last shift before a long-awaited vacation when you notice a vehicle making erratic movements ahead of you. You decide to stop the individual and, as you approach the car, realize it is the store’s owner. Upon questioning, you know he is severely intoxicated. He says he notices you from his store and pleads with you that he cannot afford to go to jail as his business will certainly suffer. Conflicted by how charitable he has been to you in the past, you decide to drive him home instead of arresting him.
Which type of corruption (hedonistic or obligatory) does the officer engage in?
Would this scenario be an example of the warning by Goldstein that accepting small gratuities is often the beginning of a “slippery slope of moral career?”
How can you help with this situation?
